Doing good in Guyana

11/5/11 Saturday

Last day of the trip. Went bird watching at the Botanical Gardens at 5 am. Saw amazing birds and for a non bird watcher, this was as peak an experience as one could have. Andy was an expert guide and we quickly learned to spot and identify a myriad of colorful, parrots, macaws, toucans, kiskadees, orioles, wrens, hawks and you get the idea. Saw a manatee and some cappuchin monkeys as well. Delightful!

Stopped at the craft fair and walked through the markets. Stopped at the photo shop and downloaded 3000 photos to a CD, taxied to a hotel to hang out by the pool at a hotel and swim. its HOT here. Did I mention that? A burger and a beer and a swim was a just reward for all our hard work.
Met some other volunteer workers poolside including a former UN rep now in Guyana helping with business development.
I realize that Guyana is a complicated country. Lots at stake here with the countries riches, gold and diamonds. Canada, Brazil, China, Europe and the USA all affiliating themselves with the business development and bringing it along from a third world nation to a more developed country. Lots of challenges, Garbage disposal for one.

Had a chinese dinner and a good conversation about the trip and different impressions we all had about what worked and what didn't. We all thought our group worked well together. Or so I thought till I found out at the airport that all had a dose of worm medicine except me which they obviously discussed and neglected to tell me. I joked about how they didn't have my back and Carol came up with a bottle of it for me which needless to say, I have not taken. I still have some Malarone to take and I would say all the prophylaxis and shots I had to take were no problem.
